Kernkraftwerk Mühleberg – BKW: Nuclear power plant visit on 14.11.2017
On October 14th, a guided tour to the nuclear plant in Mühleberg and to the nearby hydroelectric power plant was organized. More than 40 young research fellows from all over Switzerland participated in the event.
The first part started in the morning with the nuclear power plant. After a short briefing and security check, participants were divided into two groups and guided by the employees of BKW through the technological process of manufacture of fuel elements, their utilization for the production of electrical energy, existing precautions for providing secure and environmentally safe functioning of the plant and current and future status of nuclear energy in Switzerland.
After a small break, the groups shifted to the nearby hydroelectric power plant. There the principles of the functioning of the plant and of the electrical grid were explained, the talk was illustrated by demonstrations of physical experiments. The explanation was followed by a walk on the concrete dam and through the plant, including having a closer look on an operating turbine.
Finally, the participants could relax a bit in the rest area and profit from a small Apéro organized by SYCA as well as from snacks brought from home.
To sum up, the employees of BKW provided a friendly and opened for discussions atmosphere which resulted along with the power plants being interesting objects themselves in an informative and entertaining event.
