General European Highlights
Ypres 1915 - 2015 On the occasion of the 100 years of the first mass use of chemical weapons, EuCheMS published a press release "Chemists Against Chemical Weapons", recalling the horrors and the errors that took place in Ypres on the 22nd April 1915 and underlining the importance of memory in responsible science. In addition to this, EuCheMS President Prof. David Cole-Hamilton was invited at the commemoration in Ypres and was featured in a number of articles and interviews where he pledged the support of EuCheMS to the Declaration of Ypres. In the international scene, the EU comes at fourth place after South Korea, USA and Japan. With the improved website visitors will be able to find detailed descriptions and overviews of national education systems, comparative thematic reports and factual reports related to education, namely higher education and international cooperation, across more than 35 European countries. The proposed amendment aims to limit the global production and use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) − part of the family of fluorinated gases which are used in refrigeration and air-conditioning. These were introduced to replace certain ozone-depleting substances. Since HFCs are harmful climate warming gases, the proposal contributes to international efforts to fight climate change. The science brief reports that the planetary boundary for nitrogen has been breached by a factor of two, making nitrogen one of the most urgent pressures on the Earth system. However, nitrogen also plays an important role in food security, it has been estimated that without chemical nitrogen fertiliser, only three billion people would have enough food given current diets and agricultural practices. The MoU foresees the mutual recognition and endorsement of a number of activities such as conferences and meetings, public consultations and policy issues, the chemistry quality Eurolabels, European Chemist professional designation. Consultations and Roadmaps
Roadmap: Circular Economy Strategy The European Commission has published the roadmap for its new Circular Economy Strategy. Supply concentration of resources, particularly critical raw materials outside the EU , makes EU industry and society dependent on imports and vulnerable to high prices, market volatility, and the political situation in supplying countries. The strategy announces, amongst other actions, that appropriate stakeholder consultation will be carried out in the preparation for the new Circular Economy initiative, including an online consultation and a stakeholder meeting. Source: http://ec.europa.eu/ Consultation on the Role of Research in Global Food and Nutrition Security The European Commission has launched an online consultation on how science and innovation can help the EU ensuring safe, nutritious, sufficient and sustainable food globally. The discussion is linked to the theme of this year's Expo Milano 2015 "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". EuCheMS and the CNC, aware of the importance of this debate, have prepared a series of lectures on food and energy that will take place at Expo 2015. Deadline: 15 September 2015 Website: http://europa.eu/expo2015/node/286 EMA Releases Draft Reflection Paper for Public Consultation The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has released a draft reflection paper that outlines the chemical structure and properties criteria to be considered by EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) for the evaluation of a new active substance status. The reflection paper also outlines the elements that applicants are required to include in their marketing authorisation applications in support of their new active substance status claim. Deadline: 24 July 2015 Website: http://www.ema.europa.eu/ema/ Public Consultation on the Active Substance Isoxaflutole The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has published a public consultation on the active substance Isoxaflutole. Business Updates
Seminar on Applications for Authorisation ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency, is organising a seminar to improve future applicants' knowledge of the authorisation application procedure. The seminar is targeting people with a basic understanding of the application for authorisation process and, in particular, those with an intention to apply for authorisation or those who will be helping companies to apply. The event will take place at ECHA's premises in Helsinki from 29 June to 30 June. The deadline for registration is 1 June 2015. Members of European Parliament (MEPs) voted to adapt the scheme to match the plants’ thermal input, so as to reduce the administrative burden on small businesses.
