DMCCB Newsletter #10 August 2018
Dear Members of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology,
The DMCCB is involved in many scientific events and creates opportunities to make Swiss science visible to the broader community. The fall season will start with a dedicated Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology session at the SCS Fall Meeting 2018 on September 7. The DMCCB is also involved in the organization of the EFMC-ISMC and YMCS meetings in Ljubljana in September this year, and last but not least, the Division is organizing the 13th Swiss Course on Medicinal Chemistry in October in Leysin. Beside these events, the Division also fully engages in supporting its youngest fellows. To this end a travel grant program has been launched to give the opportunity to young researchers to attend scientific conferences.
If you have some good science to share, take advantage of it. You can find more details about these topics below.
We wish you a continued nice summer,
Your DMCCB
News from the DMCCB
DMCCB Board elections: Social media have become an important element of the DMCCB’s communication strategy. To recognize this fact and the efforts associated with it, the DMCCB is opening a position as Board Member with responsibility for social media. The election of a candidate will take place on September 7, at the DMCCB session of the 2018 SCS Fall Meeting. Interested members should send their application to the DMCCB president, Yves P. Auberson:
Report on the DMCCB Basel Symposium – Pharmacenter, Basel
The DMCCB Basel Symposium took place on May 14. Close to 90 participants from both industry and academia met at the Pharmacenter in Basel for an afternoon centered on “Novel chemical space and tools for chemical biology, medicinal and agrochemistry”, a topic chosen by DMCCB members. The speakers captivated the audience with fascinating talks, covering cutting-edge science spanning from peptide staples to drug de novo design with artificial intelligence. A more detailed conference report will be published in Chimia soon. The next DMCCB Basel Symposium will be organized in 2020 and it will be extended to one full day.
Upcoming events from the DMCCB
13th Swiss Course on Medicinal Chemistry – Leysin – October 7-12, 2018: This five-day Course organized by the DMCCB will focus on modern aspects of small molecule drug discovery, hit generation, lead finding and lead optimization campaigns. The target audience is scientists from industry and academia working in medicinal chemistry or flanking disciplines such as biochemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, or biophysics. Registration is open.
Upcoming events from the European Federation of Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC)XXV EFMC International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry – Ljubljana, Slovenia – September 2-6, 2018: The biennial EFMC-ISMC is a key symposium in the field of medicinal chemistry and attracts around 1200 participants from industry and academia. The symposium is divided into three streams: “technologies”, “therapeutic areas” and “chemical biology”. The programme is completed by a number of plenary lectures, first time disclosures, and recent highlights in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. Several DMCCB members are involved in this event as International Organizing Committee and Scientific Advisory Board members, session chairs or speakers. Abstract submission open until August 31, 2018.
Upcoming Congresses and SymposiaSCS Fall Meeting 2018 – EPFL, Lausanne – September 7, 2018: This year’s major Swiss chemistry event will take place at the EPFL. As usual, the DMCCB will chair a session featuring young and experienced researchers from industry and academia presenting their work in medicinal chemistry or chemical biology. As every year, prizes will be awarded for the best talks and posters in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
Did you know …… that most of our events are generously sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry and associated companies. Our main sponsors are the Swiss Industry Science Fund (SISF, supported by Novartis, Roche, Syngenta, BASF) and Idorsia, without which none of our scientific events would be financially viable. We are grateful for their long-term commitment to Swiss science, and in particular for their support of the chemical biology and medicinal chemistry community.
Frontiers in Medicinal Chemistry 2019 – Würzburg, Germany – March 24-27, 2019: For its 2019 edition, this international symposium will be again jointly organized by the DMCCB, the GDCh and DPhG. After a very successful edition in Bern in 2017, the next joint meeting will take place in Würzburg, Germany. Save the date! More information about the programme in the next newsletters.
5th EFMC Young Medicinal Chemist Symposium (EFMC-YMCS 2018) – Ljubljana, Slovenia – September 6-7, 2018: This short symposium has the aim of creating a network of young European investigators in medicinal chemistry. On this occasion, they will have the chance to share their scientific work with peers and inspiring leaders in the field. This year’s edition will take place in connection with the XXV EFMC International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (see above). Competition and excellence in Medicinal Chemistry within Europe will be stimulated by selecting the European Champion in Medicinal Chemistry. The Symposium is open to any scientist interested in topics related to Medicinal Chemistry, including Chemical Biology. DMCCB members are already involved in this event as Organizing Committee members and speakers.
EFMC-ACSMEDI – Medicinal Chemistry Frontiers 2019 – Krakow, Poland – June 10-13, 2019: The Frontiers in Medicinal Chemistry symposium is co-organized on a biennial basis, as a collaboration between the ACS (American Chemical Society) division of Medicinal Chemistry, the EFMC (European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry) and the local National Organization. The next edition will take place in Krakow, Poland, with the support of the Polish Society of Medicinal Chemistry.
EFMC-ASMC’19 – International Symposium on Advances in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry – Athens, Greece – September 1-5, 2019: The EFMC, the Hellenic Society of Medicinal Chemistry and the ChemBridge Corporation will jointly organize the ASMC’19 in Athens, in the series which started in Moscow in 2004 (ASCMC'04 and ASMC'13), followed by St. Peterburg (ASMC'07 and ASMC'11), Kiev (ASMC'09), Rehovot, Israel (ASMC'15) and the latest one in Vienna (ASMC’17). This symposium aims to bring together chemists from industry, academia and start-up companies from around the world to present latest advances in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry.
EFMC-ISMC 2020 – XXVI EFMC International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry – Basel – September 6-10, 2020: An event no one should miss, the EFMC-ISMC 2020 will be organized in Basel. The preparation has started already and the International Organizing Committee will meet for the first time in November in Basel. Make sure that you don’t miss the opportunity to present your research as an oral communication or a poster at this key symposium in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
